Prior to Sept. 2, 2002, WWE recognized only one World Champion, and that
champion represented both RAW and SmackDown! Just after SummerSlam, however,
champion Brock Lesnar inked a deal to become exclusive to SmackDown!,
leaving RAW without a champion.
RAW General Manager Eric Bischoff then declared that since Lesnar had left for
SmackDown!, that RAW needed its own champion. So with that, he opened a
briefcase and pulled out the old WCW Championship and gave it to Triple H,
naming him the first World Heavyweight Champion.
**
The World Heavyweight Championship was vacated by Raw General Manager
Eric Bischoff
following a controversial Triple Threat Match involving Edge,
Chris Benoit and Triple H.
*** Batista was drafted to SmackDown! on June 30, 2005 along with the World Heavyweight title.
**** Batista was forced to
vacate the World Heavyweight Title due to a triceps injury
wich required surgery. Kurt Angle won the vacated title that same night in a
Battle Royal, last eliminating Mark Henry for the gold.
*****
Edge cashed in his "Money
in the Bank" contract after The Undertaker and
Batista fought
to a draw in a steel cage match on SmackDown!.
****** Edge was forced to relinquish the title on the July 20, 2007 edition of SmackDown! in Laredo, Texas due to a torn pectoral muscle. Khali won a 20-man battle royal on the same night to win the title.
******* (April 29, 2008)
Vacated
after general manager
Vickie Guerrero stripped
The Undertaker of
the championship because she felt The Undertaker's
new choke hold was too dangerous
to the Smackdown! wrestlers.
******* CM Punk defeated Edge on an episode of Raw on June 30, 2008 via cashing in his Money in the Bank contract. Following the 2008 WWE Draft, Raw had been left without a world championship. CM Punk's win brought the World Heavyweight title back to Raw as its new top championship.
******** Chris Jericho won the title at
Unforgiven in a
Championship Scramble
as
a late replacement for
CM Punk.
*********
Before the RAW's
Elimination Chamber-match began,
Edge attacked
Kofi Kingston,
replaced him in the match and won the match for the World title.
********** CM Punk cashed in his Money in the Bank contract after Jeff Hardy had won the World title from Edge in a Ladder-match.
*********** Edge was stripped as a result of using the spear (which had been banned) in a previous match by Vickie Guerrero, who then awarded the belt to Ziggler. But Theodore Long made a match right after Dolph Ziggler was awarded and Edge won back the World title.
